If you’re a true hip hop head, you know that Timbarland and Swizz Beatz are absolute legends in the game. They’ve been making beats that get people moving for decades now, and during COVID, they brought us one of the most epic battles we’ve ever seen: Verzuz.
When they faced off in the first episode, I knew it was going to be something special. These guys started the whole Verzuz movement, and they’ve been killing it ever since. But I wanted to take things even further. I wanted to see who was truly the king of the sample. You see, beats in hip hop are constantly sampled from other legendary artists like The Delfonics and The Stylistics. And who better to do justice to those classic sounds than Timbarland and Swizz Beatz?
That’s why I created my own series called “Resampling the Sample.” I challenged these two legends to go head to head in an 8-track battle (4 songs each) and see who could create the best beat using samples from those iconic artists. Timberland, hailing from Virginia and responsible for creating beats for the likes of Missy Elliot and Justin Timberlake, was up against Swiss Beats, the Bronx native who’s produced hits for DMX, Jay-Z, and Drake.
Now, I know this is a tough call. These guys are both absolute monsters when it comes to beat-making. But that’s why I’m leaving it up to you, the true hip-hop heads out there. Who do you think did the best job? Let me know in the comments below.
Next week, I’ll reveal who won the battle of resampling the sample. But until then, let’s appreciate these two legends’ impact on the game. They’ve given us countless hits and inspired countless producers to follow in their footsteps. Timbarland and Swizz Beatz are true icons, and I’m honored to be able to witness their greatness firsthand.
